Coastal erosion

Steps are being taken to find an appropriate long-term environmental solution for the former tip at Frances Colliery, Dysart, on the Firth of Forth.

Contractors employed by the Coal Authority are carrying out a 12-week program of safety work, to address movement on the former colliery tip - known locally as a bing - caused by tidal erosion.

The Coal Authority agreed a programme of environmental measures with Fife Council, and consulted members of the local community, before commencing the work. Environmental measures include monitoring the effectiveness of the scheme in preventing or minimising coastal erosion, keeping noise levels below an agreed level and monitoring and suppressing dust.

Measures have also been taken to ensure the safety of members of the public using the shoreline and the Fife Coastal Footpath, which is adjacent to the site.
