From opencast to countryside

"What a difference a year makes"
Encouraging coal-mining operators to consider the impact on the environment at all stages during the working of a mine is a key objective of the Coal Authority's Environmental Policy.

When sound environmental practices are followed, opencast mining operations, which may be potentially damaging to the environment, need not have a long-term impact upon the local landscape.

The opencast site featured here, highlights what can be achieved when environmental issues are addressed before, during and after coal- mining operations have taken place.

A decision to retain existing hedgerows at the outset enabled The Banks Group to restore this opencast site at Methley, near Leeds, to countryside in just 12 months.
The Coal Authority's Licensing Manager, Ian Wilson, who is a member of the Environment Group, visited the site at the application stage, while mining was taking place and when operational activities had ceased. He was impressed with the sensitive way in which the site was worked and the efficient manner in which it was restored.

"The Coal Authority encourages sound environmental practices and close liaison with environmental agencies by all those who are authorised to carry out coal-mining operations. We look forward to highlighting more examples of good practice by our operators in future issues of 'The Environment', says Ian Wilson.
