Extension of research into underground water levels in County Durham

Further controlled trials to investigate underground water flow patterns in former mineworkings has been commissioned by the Coal Authority at Ushaw Moor and Nichoisons Pumping Stations in the Durham area after close liaison with the Environment Agency and Durham County Council.

"We have carefully analysed the results of the first trial and have now moved into the second phase of our research. As the detailed programme agreed between the Coal Authority and the Environment Agency progresses, we expect to build upon our knowledge of the migration of underground minewater in the area," says Albert Schofield, the Coal Authority's Director of Operations.

Peter Kerr, Water Resources Manager with the Environment Agency says: "We look forward to continuing a close liaison with the Coal Authority in order to identify the optimum long-term pumping scheme. The Environment Agency also recognise the importance of fully considering sustainability and economic issues, when determining a solution which ensures the protection of the environment.'

Councillor Ken Manton, Chairman of Durham County Council's Environment and Technical Services Committee welcomes continued monitoring of the minewater situation in County Durham.

'The careful testing is enabling data to be assembled which will allow more effective management of minewater and its treatment, and Durham County Council is committed to working with the Coal Authority to this end."
