Great Western Research (GWR) and Environment Agency (EA) Funded PhD Studentship

"Sustainable management of minewater pollution
from headwaters to estuaries"

To start: 1st April 2007
Closing date for applications: 24 November 2006
Supervised by: Dr. C Braungardt, University of Plymouth, School of Earth, Ocean and Environmental Sciences, Plymouth PL4 8AA, and by  Dr. D Pirrie, Camborne School of Mines, Dr. Hugh Potter, EA

The Water Framework Directive  (2000/60/EC) (WFD) aims to restore European watercourses to ‘good status’ in respect of their chemical, physical and ecological quality. In Devon and Cornwall, a number of rivers are at risk of failing the WFD objectives due to metal contamination from abandoned mine workings. However, the knowledge of metal fluxes and pathways in these catchments is patchy, and detailed field investigations are too costly to be carried out for each affected system. This project will develop a knowledge-based information system (KBIS) that will aid the EA in devising sustainable catchment management strategies based on limited datasets.
