Regional Engineer (South West region)
Working from home, the post will be located in South Wales. Salary range £30,283 to £40,777 + Performance Bonus, Civil Service Pension Options, Generous Holidays, Payment of Professional Fees, Company Vehicle and Subsidised Gym Membership
The Authority is seeking to recruit a home based Regional Engineer to cover its public safety and subsidence operations in the South West region which covers South Wales, the Forest of Dean and South West England.
The Public Safety and Subsidence team comprises a body of engineers and project managers, some home based and others based at the Authority’s Head Office. Together, the team deals with over 1,000 projects on an annual basis associated with surface hazards and coal mining subsidence claims across the coalfield areas of England, Scotland and Wales.
The successful candidate will work as a field engineer on projects including sudden ground collapses, mine entry collapses, emissions of water or gas, subsidence claims to land and buildings and occasionally spontaneous combustion of coal, all of which are associated with former mine workings.
The role:
Reporting to the Principal Projects Manager, Public Safety and Subsidence, the post holder will be responsible for:
- Managing aspects of mining subsidence claims and surface hazard incidents in line with the relevant statutory provisions
- Undertaking liability assessments relating to subsidence damage claims and surface hazard incidents
- Obtaining necessary authorisations and ensuring investigation and remedial works proceed to a satisfactory conclusion
- Being part of a response team dealing with calls to the Authority’s Emergency Hazard Line
The role requires someone who has:
- A degree or equivalent together with corporate membership of professional body (Surveying, Civil or Mining Engineering)
- Knowledge of building construction and repair
- A proven understanding of subsidence law, planning issues, coal mining technology and health and safety legislation
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- The ability to competently communicate with the general public, Local Authorities and other professional organisations
- Exceptional decision making, negotiating and organisation skills
- Experience in the management and supervision of consultants and contractors
- Working knowledge of environmental issues
- A sound level of IT literacy
