The Coal Authority was established by Parliament in 1994 and is a Non-Departmental Public Body (NDPB) which reports to the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR).
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are key to the Authority’s operational and commercial activities and centre on the use of products from Star-APIC and ESRI. The Authority’s Mining Reports and Surface Damage (MRSDS) service currently produces around 500,000 coal mining reports per annum.
The Role
Management of the specialist Data team and reporting to the Senior Mining Information Manager you will:

Take a lead role in the development of GIS based software

Be responsible for maintaining the accuracy of information within the database

Perform bespoke Geographic Information Systems based queries and data extracts

Provide technical support to the MRSDS service

Assist with the design and development of new software
The ideal candidate will preferably have:
-
A degree or equivalent in GIS or an associated relevant discipline

Experience of working with maps and map based computer systems

Experience of Geographic Information Systems, Microsoft and Unix Operating systems and Microsoft Office software

A good understanding of map and co-ordinate systems and their usage in conjunction with mining engineering

The ability to prioritise workloads and to meet tight deadlines whilst managing a high and varied workload

A flexible and pro-active approach, be self motivated, confident and an enthusiastic team player
