Project Manager – Public Safety and Subsidence
(North East of England)

Salary range £29,835 to £40,174 +Performance Bonus, Civil Service Pension Options, Generous Holidays, Payment of Professional Fees, Flexitime and Subsidised Gym Membership


The Authority is seeking to recruit a Project Manager within the Public Safety and Subsidence team. The successful candidate will work within a team of professional engineers dealing with approximately 250 projects in the North East of England on an annual basis. These projects are associated with surface hazards and coal mining subsidence claims and include sudden ground collapses, mine entry collapses, emissions of water or gas, subsidence claims and occasionally spontaneous combustion of coal, all of which are associated with former mine workings. The Authority is based in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire but is prepared to consider a home based appointment for a suitable candidate, ideally within the North East coalfield area.

The Role:

Reporting to the Principal Projects Manager the postholder will be responsible for:-

  • Managing all aspects of mining subsidence claims and surface hazard incidents in line with the relevant statutory provisions
  • Undertaking field inspections and liability assessments relating to subsidence damage claims and surface hazard incidents
  • Obtaining necessary authorisations and ensuring investigation and remedial works proceed to a satisfactory conclusion
  • Supervision of field work and repairs

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Experience in a mining, civil engineering, structural engineering or building surveying field
  • A proven understanding of coal mining technology, planning issues, subsidence law and health and safety legislation
  • Working knowledge of environmental issues
  • Experience in the management and supervision of consultants and contractors
  • Exceptional decision making, negotiating and organisational skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • A sound level of IT literacy.
