THE COAL AUTHORITY

EU & UK FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE

TO THE COAL INDUSTRY

In examining the role of the Authority in relation to the maintenance and development of a viable UK coal mining industry, it was considered appropriate to review the grants currently available to the industry via European Union and UK Government Schemes.

1. Issues

1.1 The number and scope of incentives available to coal operators is in reality quite limited. There are five headings in the attached report, which in total cover the full extent of grants to operators.

1.2 It is intended that this information be made available to operators, in this user friendly, guidance style. There is a brief introduction to each section, which states in broad terms what is available. This is followed by a more detailed statement, which should prove helpful if they wish to pursue the subject further.

2. Risk

Many operators do not have the resources to research the copious volumes of grant detailed material. There is clearly a risk therefore, that opportunities to obtain grant funding for practical problems such as training, energy efficiency, etc., may be missed.

3. Recommendation

That the  attached report  be approved for release to coal operators and other Authority stakeholders.
